Linear is a polished issue tracker loved by many product engineering teams. KaryaBoard is AI Kanban for coding agents and software teams — Stories that become tasks with approval, a hosted MCP server for Claude, and GitHub commit linking on Pro/Scale. This page compares them honestly. It does not invent feature parity, fake migration stats, or testimonials.
Different centers of gravity
Linear's strength is issue tracking craft: fast keyboard flows, refined triage, cycles, and a product experience tuned for teams that live in issues all day. If your primary need is a best-in-class issue tracker with deep maturity around workflows product managers and engineers already know, Linear is often the better default.
KaryaBoard's center of gravity is a simpler Kanban board plus agent-ready interfaces. Boards, columns, and tasks are the daily surface. Stories and AI help turn intent into task structure after human review. Claude can operate enabled boards through MCP tools on https://mcp.karyaboard.com/mcp. GitHub OAuth connects repos and links commits to tasks. The product targets small and medium teams that want less process scaffolding than enterprise trackers, and a clear path for coding agents to participate.
Where KaryaBoard is stronger
- MCP for Claude. Hosted connector, pairing via Settings → Claude MCP, board access controls, and tools such as
list_projects,create_task,draft_board_from_document, andcommit_drafted_board. Details on MCP. - Stories → tasks with approval. Generated structure is meant to be reviewed before it becomes board reality — aligned with draft/commit MCP flows.
- GitHub commit linking. OAuth connect, project repos, commits on tasks on Pro/Scale. Not auto-PR review. See GitHub integration.
- Simpler Kanban for small/medium teams. Fewer enterprise abstractions if you mainly need boards, members, and shipping context.
- Public pricing that is easy to quote. Free $0 (3 members, 3 projects); Pro $49/mo (25 members, Stories/AI/GitHub, 14-day trial, annual $468); Scale $99/mo (50 members, $6 extra member, annual $948, advanced permissions/audit/invoice flags). See pricing.
Where Linear is better
Choose Linear when issue tracking polish is the product you are buying. Linear has years of focus on speed, triage, and the rituals many startups already standardized on. KaryaBoard does not claim feature-for-feature parity with Linear's issue model, roadmap surfaces, or ecosystem integrations. If your team's muscle memory is Linear issues and you do not need Claude MCP against a Kanban board, switching for switching's sake is a weak reason.
Linear is also a better fit when organizational process already assumes Linear-shaped objects (projects, cycles, estimates) and adjacent tooling is built around that schema. KaryaBoard will not magically import that entire operating system. Evaluate migration cost honestly: boards and tasks are portable ideas, but habits and automations are not.
Agents, AI, and review loops
Both ecosystems talk about AI assistance; the concrete KaryaBoard claim is narrower and checkable. Claude pairs to a hosted MCP server, tools are named and listed, and board access is toggled per project. Draft board proposals from documents require commit after review. Stories/AI features on paid plans similarly expect humans in the loop. That is different from promising autonomous engineering. If your evaluation needs agent tools with explicit MCP names, KaryaBoard documents them on MCP docs.
Linear may offer its own AI or agent directions depending on their current product surface — those should be judged from Linear's docs, not inferred here. This comparison only asserts what KaryaBoard ships: MCP tools, Stories with approval, GitHub commit linking, and Kanban collaboration under published Free/Pro/Scale limits.
Pricing posture
KaryaBoard publishes flat USD prices with member caps: Free for small trials, Pro for Stories/AI/GitHub, Scale for larger seats and admin-oriented flags. Linear's pricing and seat models should be read from Linear's site at decision time; we do not mirror or invent their numbers. Compare total cost against who needs seats, whether you need GitHub linking, and whether Claude MCP is part of the workflow you want.
Practical recommendation
Pick Linear if polished issue tracking is the core job and your team is already productive there. Pick KaryaBoard if you want a simpler Kanban workspace, Stories→tasks with approval, GitHub commit linking, and a first-class MCP path for Claude to create and update board work. Many teams can keep Linear for company-wide issues and still experiment with KaryaBoard for agent-heavy side projects — just be deliberate about which board is the source of truth.
